Chapter Thirty

Hunter

“We are only delaying the inevitable. Celeste Silverwood must be executed for her crimes.”

When none of the Elders agreed, Markus continued his tirade. I knew facing the Elders after my petition would be a pain, but I forgot how annoying it could be.

“Must we then disregard the recent attacks she committed against our pack?” Kannon asked.

“We know how this will end: her pronounced guilty and her execution. So I see no reason for this,” Markus argued as he sneered at me.

“That is not how the pack works, Markus,” Kannon commented.

“So we should waste our time, despite knowing the outcome?” Tasha asked.

As they quarreled, I wondered how they were deemed fit to become the Elders. With how they were acting right now, they were no better than pups fighting over a silly game.

A few more minutes passed before Anthony was fed up. He tapped his hand on the table twice, catching everyone else’s attention.

“We requested an audience with the Alpha to determine the reason for his petition. Not to quarrel among ourselves while in his presence,” he said. “So we are to follow tradition and give him the chance to speak.”

Taking advantage of their full attention, I told them what happened the night I left. While omitting some facts, like Celeste’s identity, I told them how she had saved my life.

“So now, I am indebted to Celeste. However, I could not disregard her status, her crimes, or the possibility that there is more at play here.”

“And how sure are we that Celeste Silverwood was not in cahoots with that rogue wolf?”

“We’re not,” I replied.

“You’ve gone mad. You want us to risk everything for a hunch that you don’t even have proof?” Markus exclaimed.

“I know you think it is unwise. And some of you”─I looked at Markus specifically─“are dead set that Celeste Silverwood alone was behind my father’s death.”

“Are you saying we were wrong, Alpha?” Anthony asked, eyebrows raised.

“I am not questioning the Elders’ judgment. I’m only saying that there could be more than what meets the eye here.”

Anthony said nothing, so Elder Ilaria motioned for me to continue.

“My father was our Alpha, the strongest of us. And yet, how did a girl who only had her first transformation kill him?”

“Through a spell that her father, Lawrence, wrote about in the letter,” Tasha countered.

“Yes. However, how did Celeste get ahold of such a spell? How was she able to cast it herself?”

“She’s a witch! It’s obvious she learned it from her mother!” Markus exclaimed.

“Part witch. With a dead witch mother who couldn’t teach her anything.”

At that moment, I knew they were wavering. Picking the momentum, I continued explaining my theory.

“Isaac was resolute it wasn’t Celeste that they encountered in the forest that day. So I believe Celeste Silverwood wasn’t alone in this ploy. And it is why I petitioned for another trial against her. This way, we can inspect this matter,” I said.

I looked at them one by one.

“We must determine what she could be planning. Because if she had someone
